How Much Does a Trip in the USA Cost?

There is no single price for a U.S. vacation.

The United States contains destinations with dramatically different accommodation, food, transportation, and attraction costs.

Current third-party traveler-spending data illustrates this range. Budget Your Trip currently reports an overall U.S. average of about $325 per person per day, including accommodation, food, local transportation, and sightseeing. Its reported traveler spending ranges from roughly $121 per person per day for budget travel to $928 for higher-end travel.

These figures should be treated as benchmarks rather than as prices that every traveler should expect to pay.

Government travel data provides another useful reference point, although it has a different purpose. For FY2026, the U.S. General Services Administration maintains a standard CONUS lodging rate of $110 per night and a standard meals and incidental expenses rate of $68 per day, with higher locality-specific rates in some destinations. These are federal reimbursement rates for official travel, not consumer vacation prices.

This difference is important.

A traveler should not expect a vacation to cost exactly the same as a federal per diem rate, just as a travel website’s nationwide average should not be treated as the exact price for every city.
